Parental Alienation

Parental alienation occurs when one parent takes steps or actions that are designed to alienate a child from the other parent. Some of these include omitting the other parent’s name on school registration forms or doctor’s office records, deliberately registering the child under a different name, continuously making disparaging remarks about the other parent to the child or in the presence of the child, and causing conflict at all the child exchanges. Such behaviors, particularly when compounded, have the effect of making the child uncomfortable with the alienated parent or uncomfortable with displaying affection to the alienated parent in front of the alienating parent. In certain cases, this is called Parental Alienation Syndrome. Sometimes, when the alienation is extreme, a Court will transfer custody to the alienated parent. At Mercedes R.
